A Message of Relief and Recognition: Inside Lando Ash’s “Understand”

Written by Alexandria Anglade

Lando Ash’s newest release, “Understand” featuring Barbados Black, is more than a song. It is a moment of compassion, clarity, and intention. The inspiration behind the track came from his deep empathy for the women in his life. For a long time, he wanted to create something dedicated to them, something that countered the negativity often heard in today’s music. Instead of adding to the noise of songs that tear women down, Lando consciously chose to create a piece that uplifts and acknowledges their experiences.

At its core, the message of “Understand” is peaceful. It feels like a breath of relief and a quiet acceptance of truths that many women carry. Lando’s writing is shaped by his observations of the women around him and the vulnerable conversations he has shared with them about internal and external struggles. These insights became the emotional blueprint for the song’s storytelling.

The creative process behind “Understand” unfolded in an organic and collaborative way. Lando wrote the hook first, even before a beat existed. Wanting the instrumental to match the emotion he envisioned, he reached out to Roscoe Wiki to build a beat around the hook. When it came time to record the vocals, Lando was not completely satisfied with how he sounded singing the hook and the bridge. To bring the song to life in the way he imagined, he enlisted Barbados Black, whose tone and delivery captured the feeling perfectly.

One of Lando’s favorite moments in the entire track comes after the bridge. The way he says “feeling your feelings” along with the stacked vocals at the end hits him every time. He describes the vocal layering as pure chef’s kiss, a subtle detail that adds warmth and texture to the song’s atmosphere.

“Understand” also stands out from Lando’s previous work on a subject level. He admits that he does not have many songs that specifically cater to women, which makes this release a meaningful step outside his comfort zone. For him, that difference alone makes the song special.

What he hopes listeners take away from “Understand” is written directly within the title. He wants people to feel seen. He wants women to know that he recognizes the hurt, the trauma responses, and the protective masks they sometimes wear. Understanding someone’s pain does not excuse harmful behavior, but it does create room for compassion. Lando wants listeners to know that there are people who can read insecurities, people who look beyond ego and see the real person underneath.

With “Understand,” Lando Ash offers a gentle reminder of what empathy in music can sound like. It is intentional. It is heartfelt. It is a tribute to the women who shape his life and a message of acknowledgment for anyone who has ever felt unseen.

Another powerful layer of “Understand” lies in its emotional intention. Lando approached the song with a desire to acknowledge the complexity within the women he knows, honoring the strength they carry while recognizing the silent battles they face. Instead of creating a song centered around romance or desire, he wanted to focus on emotional understanding, something he believes is often missing in conversations about relationships, healing, and personal growth. The track serves as a reminder that music can validate experiences in a gentle but impactful way.

The collaboration with Barbados Black introduced a dynamic contrast that elevated the song even further. While Lando sets the lyrical tone with honesty and vulnerability, Barbados Black adds a soulful layer that amplifies the message. His voice captures the tenderness, patience, and sincerity that the song aims to express. Their chemistry creates a balance between grounded storytelling and melodic smoothness, making the track feel both heartfelt and polished.

Behind the scenes, “Understand” also marks an important moment of creative evolution for Lando. Stepping away from his usual themes allowed him to explore new emotional territory and challenge himself as an artist. The process taught him the value of trusting his instincts, embracing vulnerability, and collaborating with others who can bring out the vision he hears in his mind. In many ways, the song represents a shift in artistic maturity, revealing a more introspective side of his craft.
