Finding My Voice: A Journey into Music and Self-Expression with Ducc Maine
Written by Alexandria Anglade
Introduction:
"Growing up in Durham, North Carolina, just outside the bustling city of Raleigh, I found solace in classical music. As the only thing playing on the radio at night, it became my escape, transporting me to a world of my own. Little did I know then that this journey would eventually lead me to explore my own musical aspirations, even though I had never considered taking it seriously".
Discovering the Power of Storytelling:
"During those formative years, my brother-in-law introduced me to mixtapes from New York. It was during this time that I began to gravitate towards the storytelling aspect of music. The mixtapes, especially those by 50 Cent and DJ Whoo Kid, helped me express some of the realities and experiences of life in the South".
Defining My Unique Style:
"If I were to define my musical style, I would simply say it's me. Various experiences, ranging from understanding world politics and street politics to enduring the loss of family and friends, have shaped my perspective. I choose to wear things that reflect my emotions, often feeling trapped on this planet. However, I also acknowledge that I am not alone in these experiences, as many others witness and navigate life in their own unique ways".
The Influence of Community:
"My community has played a pivotal role in my musical journey. Durham is not just where I'm from; it's a place where I've laughed, cried, fought, and stood tall. I draw inspiration from the legacy of African American resilience that Durham represents, particularly with the formation of Black Wall Street. Remembering the struggles and triumphs of those who came before me keeps me grounded and motivated".
Overcoming Challenges:
"Life is full of challenges, and my pursuit of music has been no exception. While trying to find my artistic voice, I found myself in a hotel, desperately searching for employment just before the pandemic changed the world. This period tested my resilience, as I had to balance the need to make a living while remaining committed to my musical aspirations. Fortunately, I was able to secure employment and recover some of my losses, but I am fully aware that there is still more work to be done".
Advice to Fellow Artists:
"Through my journey, I have learned some valuable lessons that I would like to share with other aspiring artists. First and foremost, stay true to yourself, no matter the cost. Authenticity is the foundation upon which great artistry is built. Additionally, prioritize taking care of your family, as they provide the support and love needed to fuel your creative endeavors. Finally, never give up, even when faced with obstacles. Perseverance and determination will ultimately lead you to your dreams".
