Beats, Beliefs, and Beyond: The Sonic Journey of Pharaoh Tha Legend

Written by Alexandria Anglade

Pharaoh Tha Legend’s upbringing was steeped in music from the very start. Sundays meant church, choir rehearsals, and seeing family members play instruments in various church bands. His cousin Marq—affectionately known as Q—emerged as a major influence, inspiring him to write, rap, and produce music. Pharaoh’s early experiences took him to open mics at just sixteen, where he honed his performance skills; later, college offered formal training in production and engineering, helping him shape a craft built on both raw talent and technical expertise.

When it comes to creating, Pharaoh’s approach is twofold. As a producer, he typically has a clear idea—whether it’s trap, pop, or a soulful vibe. But when he’s in rap mode, his creative direction hinges on mood. A bad day might yield a reflective track, while a good day leads to something uplifting or more attuned to a party atmosphere. In collaboration with other artists, he listens closely to their vision, creating a kind of blank canvas onto which he paints the final product. If the artist arrives without a plan, Pharaoh guides them, mapping out a sonic blueprint that suits their style and story.

In the studio, Pharaoh relies on Pro Tools for recording and Ableton Live for beatmaking—software he first mastered in college. To him, great speakers are indispensable; they reveal the subtleties that can elevate or sink a track. Of course, even the most focused musician hits roadblocks. Pharaoh struggles with writer’s block, which can be compounded by full-time work and the responsibilities of fatherhood. When creativity falters, he takes drives while listening to instrumentals, letting his mind wander until the music sparks fresh ideas.

The production lessons he learned in school still guide him. By referencing tracks with a similar vibe, he ensures his own music hits the target in terms of loudness and overall atmosphere. Among his personal projects, “Quiet Boy” holds special significance. Released a few years ago around the birth of his son, it captured a period of experimentation and growth, both creatively and personally—proving that Pharaoh Tha Legend’s journey is defined by evolving artistry, steadfast devotion, and the family roots that first led him to music.
